Incidence and associated factors of laryngospasm among pediatric patients who underwent surgery under general anesthesia, in University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, 2019: A cross-sectional study
Anesthesiology Research and Practice Feb 02, 2020
Chekol WB, et al. - By performing this institution-based, cross-sectional analysis, researchers determined the incidence as well as related factors of laryngospasm in pediatric patients who underwent surgery under general anesthesia. This inquiry was undertaken at University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (UOGCSH). Findings revealed that the occurrence of laryngospasm is possible at any phase of the anesthetic. The overall rate of laryngospasm at UOGCSH was found to be 18.4%, with the vast majority of episodes happening on emergence. The factors that were predictive of laryngospasm were the inadequate depth of anesthesia, URTI, airway anomalies, multiple attempts of airway devices, and oropharyngeal secretion. Therefore, there is a requirement for added vigilance in cases with URTI, airway anomalies, or patients who need multiple attempts at airway device insertion. To avert laryngospasm, prompt clearing of airway secretions and adequate depth of anesthesia may prove to be helpful. As most of the patients received an IV induction, endotracheal intubation, and maintenance with halothane, exercising caution is mandatory in extrapolating these findings to other patient groups.
