Incidence, admission rates, and predictors, and economic burden of adult emergency visits for acute pancreatitis: Data from the National Emergency Department Sample, 2006 to 2012
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Feb 16, 2019
Garg SK, et al. - Via data from the National Emergency Database Sample (2006 to 2012), researchers analyzed trends in emergency department (ED) utilization and costs, risk factors for hospital admission, and associated hospital costs and length of stay (LOS) in patients presenting with acute pancreatitis (AP). There were a total of 2,193,830 ED visits analyzed. Although the overall incidence of ED visits for AP is relatively stable, younger patients with alcohol-associated and acute on chronic pancreatitis seem to be driving continued increases in ED visits and relevant costs. Though hospitalization rates and LOS are dropping, the relevant inflation-adjusted costs are increasing.
