Inadequate laser coagulation is an important cause of treatment failure in Type 1 retinopathy of prematurity

Acta Ophthalmologica Apr 09, 2020

Spandau U, et al. - Via reviewing the medical charts of all infants with disease persistence after laser treatment at Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden, during a 10‐year period (2009–2019), researchers investigated the cause of treatment failures in Type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). In order to document the retinal appearance before and after retreatment, RetCam photography and angiography were used. Ten infants (18 eyes), nine of whom had been referred from other hospitals, had a Type 1 ROP persistence in zone I or zone II despite previous laser treatment. Inadequate laser coagulation is a major cause of treatment failure of ROP Type 1. Laser coagulation in zone I is another cause. Some kind of centralization of the ROP treatment is proposed to reduce remaining visual disability.
