In utero exposure to tobacco smoke, subsequent cardiometabolic risks and metabolic syndrome among US adolescents
Annals of Epidemiology Jul 08, 2018
Stevens DR, et al. - Authors evaluated the association between in utero smoke exposure and cardiometabolic risk factors and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adolescents. Results demonstrated that in utero smoke exposure and an increased likelihood of high waist circumference and BMI percentiles, especially among female adolescents, were correlated. MetS was seen in 9.0% of exposed vs. 5.9% of unexposed adolescents. The long-term cardiometabolic impact in offspring was seen, thereby, suggesting the importance of pre-pregnancy smoking cessation.
