In utero exposure to SSRIs and development of mental disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Apr 16, 2019
Halvorsen A, et al. - Via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis researchers examined the risk of developing mental- or behavioral disorders among cases with in utero exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The review included a total of 20 studies and meta-analysis was done on results from 18 of these. Outcomes revealed enhanced risk of developing mental- or behavioral disorders in correlation with exposure to SSRIs in utero. However, these associations do not necessarily reflect a causal relationship as residual confounding by indication might have affected the results included in this meta-analysis, which is likely to account for some (or all) of the positive association.
