In utero exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus and long term endocrine morbidity of the offspring

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Sep 20, 2018

Abokaf H, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers included all singletons born to women who delivered between 1988 and 2014 to evaluate whether in utero exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has any impact on risk for long-term endocrine morbidity (such as diabetes mellitus and obesity) of the offspring. Findings revealed that during the study period, 231,271 deliveries met the inclusion criteria, of which 12,642 deliveries (5.4%) were diagnosed with GDM. Risk factor for long-term endocrine morbidity in the offspring was exposure to GDM. The rate of long-term hospitalizations with diagnoses of endocrine morbidity was higher among children exposed to GDM in utero vs those who were not, during the follow-up period. Additionally, in-utero exposure to GDMA1, and especially to GDMA2, were determined risk factors for long-term endocrine disease during childhood.
