In-utero and perinatal influences on suicide risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Lancet Psychiatry May 24, 2019
Orri M, et al. - Researchers examined how in-utero and perinatal exposures influence suicide, suicide attempt, and suicidal ideation by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis of 42 eligible population-based prospective studies. Findings revealed higher suicide risk in correlation with family or parental features like high birth order (eg, for fourth-born or later-born vs first-born), teenage mothers, single mothers, indices of socioeconomic position like low maternal and paternal education, and fetal growth (eg, low birthweight and small for gestational age. For suicide attempt and suicidal ideation, they noted comparable patterns of associations. Findings thereby indicate links between prenatal and perinatal features and increased suicide risk during the life course.
