In-hospital outcomes in patients with a history of malignancy undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation

The American Journal of Cardiology Dec 14, 2020

Grant JK, Vincent L, Ebner B, et al. - In patients with a history of malignancy, researchers examined the utilization as well as in-hospital results of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) using data from the National Inpatient Sample Database. A total of 123,070 patients received TAVI between 2012 and 2017. Among these, a previous history of malignancy was present in 23,670 patients (19.2%). With time, an upward trend in the proportion of TAVI patients with a history of malignancy was evident between 2012 and 2017. Patients with a history of malignancy had a greater prevalence of previous tobacco use and major depressive disorder, but still underwent TAVI safely with low rates of in-hospital all-cause death, yet a greater cost of hospitalization as well as more frequent implantation of pacemaker devices. A history of malignancy predicted lower odds of death in patients who underwent TAVI and higher odds of pacemaker implantation, s seen in a multivariate logistic regression model to adjust for confounding factors.
