In-hospital mortality of cardiogenic shock complicating ST-elevation myocardial infarction in Malaysia: A retrospective analysis of the Malaysian National Cardiovascular Database (NCVD) registry
BMJ Open May 10, 2019
Venkatason P, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers studied the incidence, clinical features, and outcomes of patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and cardiogenic shock (CS) in Malaysia. The study sample consisted of 16,517 patients from 18 hospitals in Malaysia. STEMI was diagnosed among participants between 2006 and 2013. According to findings, CS complicates 10.6% of all STEMIs. The in-hospital mortality rate was high (34.1%); invasive coronary revascularization reduced the mortality rate substantially. Similar to other studies, the predictors of poor prognosis were multiple comorbidities including increased age. Being over 65 years of age or having diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and/or chronic lung and kidney disease resulted in increased mortality risk. The authors suggested that there is need for greater effort to improve results, and increased efforts are being made to improve the primary and in-hospital percutaneous coronary interventions rate.
