In-hospital acute kidney injury after TKA revision with placement of an antibiotic cement spacer
Journal of Arthroplasty Dec 16, 2017
Berliner ZP, et al. - This study involves assessment of patients that received either a static or articulating antibiotic cement spacer (ACS) for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). The goal was to determine the incidence, as well as potential risk factors, of in-hospital acute kidney injury (AKI) in this cohort. High incidence of AKI was reported in this population, with a possible involvement of a lower baseline hemoglobin in the AKI etiology. Given that anemia confers risk for postoperative AKI in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass, monitoring of anemic patients for AKI when implanting an ACS seemed clinically appropriate.
