Altrichter S, et al. - In patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), researchers determined the prevalence and functional relevance of IgE to Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxins (SEs). A strong correlation of Staphylococcus enterotoxin B (SEB)-IgE levels with disease activity (UASday) was noted in CSU patients. Furthermore, significantly higher basophil histamine release (BHR), in response to SEB, was detected in basophils loaded with the serum of CSU patients vs healthy controls (HCs) and showed clinical correlation with duration of disease. Overall, IgE against SEs was suggested to be possibly contributing to the pathogenesis of CSU in a subpopulation of patients.
