Impulsivity in the self-harm and suicidal behavior of young people: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Psychiatric Research Jun 14, 2019
McHugh CM, et al. - Via conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis 18 studies representing 902 youth with self-harm or suicidal behavior and 1,591 controls without a history of these behaviors, researchers investigated the predictive value of impulsivity for self-harm or suicidal behavior in young people. Self-harm or suicidal behaviors were noted in association with deficits in inhibitory control and impulsive decision-making. Young people have multiple facets of impulsivity that are correlated with suicidal behavior, and future studies on suicide should be designed to capture impulsive states and assess the effect on different subtypes of impulsivity.
