Improving compliance in adults with epilepsy on a modified Atkins diet: A randomized trial
Seizure - European Journal of Epilepsy Jun 27, 2018
McDonald TJW, et al. - In adults with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), researchers assessed if the use of a ketogenic formula during the first month of the modified Atkins diet (MAD) improves seizure reduction and compliance compared to MAD alone. Researchers recruited 80 adults (age ≥ 18 years) with DRE and ≥ 4 dependably measurable seizures/month. It was noted that over 50% of adults with DRE using MAD show ≥ 50% seizure reduction at 1 month, however early MAD supplementation with a ketogenic formula increases long-term adherence. Findings revealed that combining MAD with a ketogenic formula increases ketogenic ratio over MAD alone. It was observed that adults using ketogenic formula early during MAD show decreased constipation trend.
