Improvement of postpartum depression and psychosis after electroconvulsive therapy: – A population-based study with a matched comparison group
Journal of Affective Disorders Apr 13, 2018
Rundgren S, et al. - Researchers examined if the response rate to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for depression and psychosis is higher during the postpartum period than outside it. Secondarily, they investigated the predictors of a response to ECT during the postpartum period. Postpartum cases who received ECT within 6 months of delivery were matched to depression and/or psychosis not in a postpartum period. There was a high response rate to ECT among those with postpartum depression and/or psychosis, and it was higher among patients with psychosis or depression during the postpartum period than outside it (87% vs 73.5%). This study thereby supports ECT for severe forms of postpartum depression and/or psychosis.
