Improved long-term cardiovascular outcomes after intensive vs standard screening of diabetic complications: An observational study
Cardiovascular Diabetology Sep 25, 2019
Morieri ML, Longato E, Mazzucato M, et al. - Researchers performed an observational study to assess if intensive vs standard complication screening influences long-term cardiovascular results in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Participants included 368 patients with T2D who were referred for intensive screening, offered as a 1-day session of clinical–instrumental assessment of diabetic complications, followed by dedicated counseling. The researchers used 2:1 propensity score matching, and identified control T2D patients who received standard complication screening at different visits, from an overall sample of 4,906 patients. After intensive complication screening among T2D patients visiting a specialist outpatient clinic, better long-term cardiovascular outcomes were observed. For cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, no significant influence was observed, and a decreased rate of hospitalization for heart failure was identified as the main driver of the benefit.
