Importance of surgeon-performed ultrasound in the preoperative nodal assessment of patients with potential thyroid malignancy

Monteiro R, et al. - In this work, the role of surgeon-performed ultrasound in the evaluation of patients who underwent lateral neck dissection for thyroid cancer was determined. In this study, 45% of the patients would have undergone an incorrect initial operation, if the operation relied on only standard preoperative imaging. Thereby suggested the cruciality for awareness of the limitations of prereferral imaging while treating patients with thyroid and parathyroid disease. Researchers recognized surgeon-performed ultrasound as a useful tool in the diagnosis and accurate staging of patients.
