Importance of early COPD in young adults for development of clinical COPD: Findings from the Copenhagen General Population Study
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine May 28, 2021
Çolak Y, Afzal S, Nordestgaard BG, et al. - In this study with 14,870 people aged 20–100 years with spirometry 10 years apart, researchers assessed risk of clinical chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) 10 years later among young adults from the general population with and without early COPD with an emphasis on smoking exposure. Participants were selected from the Copenhagen General Population Study. On the basis of the amount of smoking exposure, clinical COPD development 10 years later was shown to occur in <24% of young adults in the general population with early COPD. Reconsidering a smoking exposure threshold for early COPD is recommended, because younger people were less represented in those with high smoking exposure.
