Implications of transfer status on bowel loss in children undergoing emergency surgery for malrotation

Polites SF, et al. - Researchers performed this study of a multicenter cohort of patients who underwent emergency surgical intervention for malrotation, to investigate if bowel resection in children undergoing emergency surgery for malrotation vary, particularly in context to transfer status. Using the Pediatric Health Information System, they included 3373 patients with malrotation; 44.8% were transferred in. Observations revealed a higher likelihood of requiring bowel resection in patients who require hospital-to-hospital transfer for emergent surgical management of malrotation, this is in turn associated with greater morbidity.
