Implications of hidradenitis suppurativa phenotypes in cardiovascular risk and treatment decisions: A retrospective cohort study
Dermatology Jan 28, 2021
Cuenca-Barrales C, Montero-Vilchez T, Salvador-Rodríguez L, et al. - Provided that new phenotypes of integrative hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) lesion patterns, an inflammatory phenotype (IP) and a follicular phenotype (FP) have been proposed and are characterized by different lesion patterns, symptoms and risks of disease progression, researchers performed this retrospective cohort study to ascertain if lesion pattern phenotypes have a different cardiovascular risk factor profile, and are correlated with a different therapeutic approach in the setting of an HS clinic. Participants in the study were 233 patients with HS. One hundred and seventeen HS patients were categorised as FP and 112 as IP. Higher CRP values are correlated with IP, indicating a higher cardiovascular risk in these patients and a different therapeutic strategy as well. This knowledge could help direct dermatologists in HS patient care and help decide potential guidelines for treatment.
