Implementing cognitive remediation in substance use treatment: the impact of staff perceptions
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment Jan 29, 2021
Allan J, Thompson A, Meumann N, et al. - Cognitive remediation (CR) programs are new to substance abuse treatment and the context of implementation, specifically staff perceptions, are vital to changing practice, so researchers assessed the perspectives of treatment staff members’ of the advantages and challenges of a new CR intervention in their practice. At implementation of the CR program, semi-structured interviews were conducted with staff at a residential substance treatment center; interviews were conducted again 6 months after implementation. Per findings, the benefits of the cognitive remediation program for clients are clearly identified by the staff. Even after conducting staff engagement activities, staff members’ in-principle support for a program does not necessarily translate into active involvement. More likely a significant role is played by organizational factors in implementation success or failure and there is a necessity for further research into how the organizational culture of AOD services influences the implementation of cognitive remediation therapy.
