Impaired small airway function in non‐asthmatic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps
Clinical & Experimental Allergy Oct 01, 2020
Du K, Zheng M, Zhao Y, et al. - To clarify if small airway dysfunction (SAD) is identified in non‐asthmatic patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNPs), researchers investigated lung function of non‐asthmatic patients with CRSwNP as well as assessed its clinical relevance in CRSwNPs. Prospectively obtained data for 191 consecutive CRSwNP patients, including 73 asthmatic and 118 non‐asthmatic patients, and 30 controls were analyzed. Reduced forced expiratory flow at 75% of the FVC (FEF75) and FEF50 was detected in non‐asthmatic CRSwNP patients vs controls. As per the evidence gained in this study, non‐asthmatic CRSwNP patients may develop SAD, which was shown to be correlated with the severity as well as recurrence of CRSwNP. A link was identified between reduced lung function of patients with CRSwNP and degree of type‐2 inflammation.
