Impacts of the affordable care act Dependent Coverage Provision on young adults with cancer
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Mar 23, 2019
Barnes JM, et al. - In young adult cancer patients, researchers analyzed changes in insurance coverage and diagnosis stage through 2014 related to the Dependent Coverage Provision. Analyses were conducted using a quasi-experimental study design using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 18 and National Cancer Database (NCDB) data from 2007 to 2014. SEER and NCDB included a total of 36,901 and 92,358 young adults, respectively. In young adults aged 19-25 vs those aged 27–29 years, steady increases in the percentage insured, variable increases in early-stage diagnoses, and reductions in late-stage diagnoses were seen. These outcomes provided clear evidence of the associated impact of a Dependent Coverage Provision on insurance coverage in young adults with cancer. Clear impacts on the stage of diagnosis, however, are less obvious.
