Impacts of surgical interventions on the long-term outcomes in individuals with trisomy 18
Journal of Pediatric Surgery Jan 24, 2020
Iida C, Muneuchi J, Yamamoto J, et al. - Researchers sought to ascertain the benefits of surgical interventions regarding the long-term outcomes among individuals with trisomy 18. From 2003 to 2017, they identified 69 individuals with trisomy 18 admitted to 4 tertiary neonatal centers and divided the cohort into two groups: individuals with surgical interventions and conservative treatments. Gestational age was 37 (27–43) weeks and birth weight was 1,700 (822–2,546) g, respectively. In 41% of individuals, surgical interventions including cardiac and digestive surgery were undertaken. Outcomes suggest that among individuals with trisomy 18, aggressive surgical interventions contribute to achieving homecare but not long-term survival.
