Impacts of neighborhood characteristics on treatment and outcomes in women with ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Aug 18, 2018
Zhang S, et al. - Researchers assessed how neighborhood characteristics influence treatment and outcomes of ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast (DCIS). They used the Missouri Cancer Registry to identify 9,195 women with DCIS diagnosed between 1996 and 2011. They used US Census data and American Community Survey data to construct a composite index to evaluate census tract-level socioeconomic deprivation, and used rural-urban commuting area codes to define rural census tracts. Findings demonstrated higher risks of suboptimal treatment and ipsilateral breast tumors in relation to neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation. They noted a significant variation in DCIS treatment by rural/urban locations, but the observed risks of second breast tumors were not found to be statistically significantly different in rural/urban locations.
