Impact on ICU mortality of moderate alcohol consumption in patients admitted with infection
Journal of Critical Care Feb 13, 2020
Gacouin A, Painvin B, Coirier V, et al. - This prospective observational cohort study was undertaken to determine if moderate alcohol consumption negatively influences the prognosis of critically ill patients admitted with infection. Among individuals (n = 478) admitted with documented infection, mortality at day 28 in the group of abstainers and non-trauma patients with estimated alcohol consumption lower than 100 g/week was contrasted with that in non-alcohol-dependent patients with estimated alcohol consumption between 100 and 350 g/week. Findings suggested an independent association of alcohol consumption between 100 and 350 g/week with mortality at day 28. Moderate alcohol consumption is linked to a poorer prognosis in critically ill individuals admitted with infection.
