Impact of volatile anesthetic agents on early clinical outcomes in liver transplantation
Transplantation Proceedings Jun 10, 2018
Mangus RS, et al. - Researchers performed a comparison of inhaled anesthetics in early liver allograft ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in liver transplantation (LT) via analyzing LT recipient and organ donor data of all LTs performed at a single center between 2001 and 2015. The analysis included 1291 primary LTs, with 3 primary inhaled agents: isoflurane (62%), desflurane (8%), and sevoflurane (30%). Rates of early allograft dysfunction and renal dysfunction were similar with all 3 agents. No statistical difference was noted in the subgroup analysis of high-risk donor grafts. Administration of desflurane or sevoflurane appeared providing some early hepatoprotection against IRI, however, in terms of longer-term outcomes all agents were equivalent.
