Impact of vitamin D and vitamin D receptor on risk of cardiovascular diseases in children and adolescents with obesity in Sichuan, China: A cross-sectional study

Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism Feb 28, 2021

Xie H, Min M, Guo S, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-Sectional Study to analyze the impacts of obesity, serum vitamin D levels, and vitamin D receptor (VDR) FokI genotype on the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in children and adolescents in Sichuan, China. Serum vitamin D levels, serum lipid levels, and VDR FokI gene polymorphisms have been tested in the laboratory. Findings suggested that obese children with low vitamin D levels who are carriers of the C allele of the FokI gene have lower levels of several biochemical markers of CVD risk compared with those who were TT homozygous. Obese children and adolescents can benefit from vitamin D supplementation by reducing their risk of CVD, particularly if they are carriers of the C allele of the FokI gene.
