Impact of the pre-illness lipid profile on sepsis mortality
Journal of Critical Care Mar 19, 2020
Maile MD, et al. - Considering the various studies demonstrating an association between lipid levels during sepsis and outcomes, researchers here examined the contribution, if any, of baseline lipid levels to the association between lipid levels during sepsis and outcomes via performing a retrospective cohort study at a tertiary-care academic medical center. They analyzed both Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score-based definitions of sepsis in this work. Outcomes suggest that in septic patients, baseline lipid values, especially triglyceride concentrations, are associated with hospital mortality. Severity of illness seemed not influencing this association.
