Impact of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic on systemic lupus erythematosus patients: Results from a multi-center prospective cohort
Lupus Jul 30, 2021
Kasturi S, Price LL, Paushkin V, et al. - Researchers investigated the initial influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Patients with SLE were invited to complete a supplemental web-based questionnaire in the summer of 2020. A total of 97 patients were invited; 63 of whom (65%) completed a supplemental questionnaire. Per findings, nearly 50% of respondents displayed elevations in anxiety (47.5%) and depression (48.3%) and there were over 40% who scored worse in measures of pain interference, fatigue, and cognitive abilities. Overall analysis revealed that a significant physical and emotional toll was experienced by SLE patients during the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic. For improving health outcomes in this population, they suggest comprehensive patient-centered care, including monitoring and addressing anxiety and health-related quality of life, as critical during the ongoing health crisis.
