Impact of the duration of antibiotic therapy on relapse and survival following surgery for active infective endocarditis
European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Oct 16, 2018
Rao VP, et al. - In patients with acute infective endocarditis (IE) needing surgery before the completion of a planned course of antibiotic therapy, researchers assessed if the duration of postoperative antibiotic therapy impacts outcomes. They analyzed 182 IE episodes in the final analysis. In support of previous findings, this study suggests that shorter courses of postoperative antibiotics can be safely given to selected patients who need surgery during active IE without an impact on relapse of infection or survival.
