Impact of the Affordable Care Act on early-stage diagnosis and treatment for women with ovarian cancer
Journal of Clinical Oncology Jun 13, 2019
Smith AJ, et al. - Researchers investigated how stage at diagnosis and time to treatment for women with ovarian cancer were influenced by 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA). Among ovarian cancer patients with ages 21-64 years vs those aged 65 years and older, stage at diagnosis and time to treatment prior to and following the 2010 ACA were evaluated using a difference-in-differences approach. As the pre-reform years, the National Cancer Database with the 2004-2009 surveys were used. As the post-reform years, the 2011-2014 surveys were used. The probability of being diagnosed at an early stage and receiving treatment within 30 days of diagnosis was more in women with ovarian cancer, under the ACA. Because major determinants of survival are stage and treatment, these gains under the ACA could have long-term influences on women with ovarian cancer.
