Impact of the Affordable Care Act on colorectal cancer screening, incidence, and survival in Kentucky
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Feb 27, 2019
Gan T, et al. - As Kentucky, one of the first states to adopt the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansion, ranks first in the US in cancer incidence and mortality and had markedly increased insurance coverage for residents, researchers investigated how Medicaid expansion influenced colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, diagnosis, and survival in Kentucky. Querying the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the Kentucky Cancer Registry, they identified a significant increase in CRC screening, CRC diagnoses, and overall survival in CRC patients with Medicaid in correlation with the implementation of Medicaid expansion. They observed that these impacts were even more dramatic in the Appalachian population.
