Impact of statins on clinical outcomes after carotid endarterectomy and stenting: A population-based cohort study
Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 25, 2018
Hussain MA, et al. - In this population-level, retrospective cohort study of all individuals ≥66 years old who underwent carotid endarterectomy or stenting in Ontario, Canada (2002-2014), researchers investigated the rates of statin use and examined the association between statin therapy and clinical outcomes. A total of 10,723 patients underwent carotid revascularization; among these 7893 were receiving preprocedural statin therapy; moderate- or high-dose therapy was used by 7384 (68.9%) patients. Patients with significant carotid disease on statin therapy showed ∼25% lower risk of cardiovascular events. Along with other supportive evidence, this study supports considering statins in patients undergoing carotid revascularization and the efforts to increase statin use in this undertreated population.
