Impact of smoking cessation on clinical outcomes in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma receiving curative chemoradiotherapy: A prospective study

Head & Neck May 30, 2019

Chen JLY, et al. - Researchers examined how smoking cessation during curative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) influence the complication rate and tumor progression risk. They enrolled 63 patients with nonmetastatic HNSCC who were smokers at diagnosis (carbon monoxide breath concentrations ≥3 ppm) and underwent curative CRT; of these, successful discontinuation of smoking was noted in 41 patients (65%) throughout CRT. Patients with HNSCC showed reduced treatment-related toxicities, tumor progression risks, and a lower probability of permanent gastrostomy or tracheostomy in correlation to smoking cessation during curative CRT.
