Impact of sex on survival and neurologic outcomes in adults with in-hospital cardiac arrest

The American Journal of Cardiology Nov 18, 2019

Parikh PB, et al. - Among consecutive patients (n = 680) admitted with in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) who underwent ACLS-guided resuscitation from 2012 to 2018 at an academic tertiary medical center, researchers determined the impact of female sex on death and poor neurologic outcomes in adults with IHCA. This prospective, contemporary registry included 680 patients (men and women, n = 418 and n = 262, respectively). Lower rates of coronary artery disease, previous myocardial infarction, and peripheral artery disease, and higher rates of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and depression were observed in women. Overall, findings revealed an independent link of female sex with nearly two-fold higher rates of in-hospital death and a trend toward lower rates of favorable neurologic results.
