Impact of severe mental illness on cancer stage at diagnosis and subsequent mortality: A population-based register study
Schizophrenia Research Jun 15, 2018
Toender A, et al. - Individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) were compared to individuals without SMI in terms of cancer incidence, disease stage at diagnosis and subsequent mortality. Researchers followed the entire Danish population from 1978 to 2013 using nationwide registries. As per findings, males with SMI displayed lower cancer incidence compared to males without SMI. They noted similar incidence of cancer in the two groups of women. Both sexes with SMI showed higher subsequent mortality, however more advanced stages of cancer did not explain the excess mortality.
