Impact of self-inflicted injury on nontherapeutic laparotomy in patients with abdominal stab wounds
Injury Jun 08, 2018
Matsumoto S, et al. - Researchers investigated if the rates of exploratory laparotomy and nontherapeutic laparotomy (NTL) would be higher in self-inflicted patients. Researchers identified 1,705 eligible patients via reviewing abdominal stab wound (ASW) patients from 2004–2014 in the Japan Trauma Data Bank. As per findings, ASWs were predominantly self-inflicted. A significantly higher rate of psychiatric history, but lower injury severity was noted in self-inflicted patients. Multivariable analysis suggested that self-inflicted patients were independently associated with exploratory laparotomy and NTL.
