Impact of sarcopenia on the risk of advanced colorectal neoplasia
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Jun 29, 2018
Hong JT, et al. - Researchers explored the link between sarcopenia and advanced colorectal neoplasia in a large screening population. Participants in the study were 14,024 asymptomatic adults who underwent first-time screening colonoscopy. Using bioelectrical impedance analysis, appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) was estimated. The results obtained from this cross-sectional study suggested that sarcopenia was significantly and progressively correlated with the risk of advanced colorectal neoplasia. However, this relationship might be explained by metabolic factors that could be potential mediators of the effect of sarcopenia.
