Impact of routine rotavirus vaccination in Germany: Evaluation five years after its introduction
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Mar 26, 2020
Marquis A, et al. - Given that routine rotavirus (RV)-vaccination is recommended in Germany since August 2013, researchers conducted this investigation to analyze the effect of routine RV vaccination in Germany. Using statutory health insurance prescription data, they estimated RV-vaccine uptake in the 2014–2018 birth cohorts. They analyzed RV-gastroenteritis (RVGE)-surveillance data of the German infectious diseases notification system for impact assessment. Data reported that vaccination coverage raised from 59% (2014) to 80% (2018). According to findings, routine RV-vaccination is well accepted in Germany. Since routine RV-vaccination was introduced, RVGE decreased significantly through herd protection in < 5-year-olds and in non-vaccinated older age groups. Intussusception decline in the first year of life indicates a possible vaccination-associated protection against gastrointestinal infections that could cause intussusception. Such promising findings will be conveyed to physicians and parents with a view to further increasing vaccine uptake and protecting more infants.
