Impact of revascularization vs medical therapy alone for chronic total occlusion management in older patients
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Mar 08, 2019
Flores-Umanzor EJ, et al. - Researchers compared revascularization (percutaneous coronary intervention [PCI] or coronary artery bypass graft [CABG]) vs medical treatment (MT) alone for chronic total occlusions (CTOs) in patients aged 75 and older in terms of long-term survival. Participants were 1,252 consecutive patients with at least one CTO, stratified by age (<75 years vs ≥75 years), and followed-up for a median duration of 3.5 years. Findings revealed that a better outcome in terms of all-cause and cardiac mortality could be predicted by revascularization (PCI or CABG) vs MT alone in patients aged at least 75 years with a CTO. Between the two types of revascularization, there were no differences in mortality.
