Impact of radiation on cardiovascular outcomes in older resectable esophageal cancer patients with Medicare
American Journal of Clinical Oncology May 28, 2021
Sarkar RR, Hatamipour A, Panjwani N, et al. - Researchers analyzed a cohort of esophageal cancer patients to determine how cardiovascular morbidity could be impacted by radiotherapy and different radiation techniques. This study comprised 1,125 patients with esophageal cancer, aged 65 and older, who underwent surgery alone, or surgery preceded by either preoperative chemotherapy or preoperative chemoradiation. Participants were selected from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results-Medicare database. In this study, operative esophageal cancer patients treated with preoperative chemoradiation were found to have an elevated risk of cardiovascular complications, though attenuation of these risks might be brought about by more cardioprotective radiation techniques such as intensity modulated radiotherapy.
