Impact of radiation-induced menopause in young women with gynecological cancer
Fertility and Sterility Apr 11, 2019
Chang EJ, et al. - Young premenopausal women were analyzed for the prevalence of menopausal symptoms after pelvic irradiation for gynecological cancer. Women 40 years old or younger who underwent cervical cancer and endometrial cancer treatment from 2008 to 2013 (N=106) were retrospectively studied for this work. Outcomes revealed the development of menopausal symptoms in nearly half of these young premenopausal women, a prevalence similar to those who suffer surgical menopause with oophorectomy. This stresses the need for awareness of radiation-induced menopause in young women with gynecologic malignancy. Only 19 women received hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms, highlighting the suboptimal treatment for radiation-induced menopause these women receive; more proactive counseling and hormone therapy in these patients is needed.
