Impact of prior treatment on long-term outcome of peroral endoscopic myotomy in pediatric achalasia
Journal of Pediatric Surgery Aug 04, 2019
Nabi Z, et al. - Researchers examined children (≤ 18 years) with achalasia who underwent peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) to determine the long-term efficacy of POEM. Of 53 children who underwent POEM at their center, they included 17 children who completed at least 3 years of follow-up. Prior treatment was reported in eight patients: pneumatic dilatation (6), Heller's myotomy (1) and both Heller's myotomy and pneumatic dilatation (1). The analysis revealed long-term clinical success in 88.2 % of children. This suggests that for achalasia in children, POEM is a safe, effective and durable treatment. The outcomes of POEM in children were not influenced by prior treatment.
