Impact of preprocedural anemia on outcomes of patients with mitral regurgitation undergoing MitraClip implantation
The American Journal of Cardiology Jun 08, 2018
Kaneko H, et al. - Researchers determined the impact of preprocedural anemia on MitraClip implantation outcomes in patients with mitral regurgitation (MR). They found that the occurrence of preprocedural anemia was common (56% of study population). Compared with patients without anemia, patients with anemia did have similar improvement in MR, but without decrease in N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). Lower survival was demonstrated by Kaplan-Meier curves for patients with anemia. Overall, a negative prognostic impact of preprocedural anemia was seen prominently in patients with higher baseline NT-proBNP levels. These data necessitate the optimal management of anemia prior to MitraClip implantation, specifically for those with severe heart failure.
