Impact of preoperative nutritional scores on 1-year postoperative mortality in patients undergoing valvular heart surgery
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Jan 08, 2021
Cho JS, Shim JK, Kim KS, et al. - In this retrospective cohort observational study, researchers sought to determine the impact of preoperative malnutrition, diagnosed with objective nutritional scores, on 1-year mortality in patients undergoing valvular heart surgery (VHS). Among 1,927 VHS patients assessed in this study, higher 1-year mortality was observed after VHS in correlation with malnutrition, as identified by a high Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score and low Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI). Findings suggest the highest predictive ability of the CONUT score and, that its addition to the EuroSCORE II, yield more accurate risk stratification.
