Impact of prehospital airway management on combat mortality
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Feb 27, 2018
Hardy G, et al. - Researchers performed a comparison of outcomes of combat casualties that received prehospital airway interventions, specifically bag valve mask (BVM) ventilation, cricothyrotomy, and supraglottic airway (SGA) placement to assess the effectiveness of airway management strategies used in the military pre-hospital setting. As prehospital BVM and cricothyrotomy were not different regarding measured outcomes, prehospital BVM ventilation was supported as a possible alternative to cricothyrotomy. In the prehospital combat setting, further cautions against SGA use were required due to higher morbidity demonstrated by fewer ventilator, hospital, and ICU free days than those receiving cricothyrotomy or BVM ventilation. The groups were not different in 30-day survival.
