Impact of point‐of‐care testing on length of stay of patients in the emergency department: A cluster‐randomized controlled study
Academic Emergency Medicine Jul 30, 2020
Hausfater P, Hajage D, Bulsei J, et al. - In the emergency department (ED), crowding is a frequent concern and there has been a proposal of laboratory point‐of‐care testing (POCT) to reduce patients' length of stay (LOS). Researchers here investigated if LOS can be reduced with an extended panel of POCT solutions. A single‐center, prospective, open‐label, controlled cluster‐randomized study was conducted including 23,231 patients; the main outcome measures were determined in 20,923 of these patients. They randomized blood test processing into 1‐week inclusion periods: interventional arm (laboratory analyses performed on POCT analyzers implemented in the ED) or control arm (central laboratory). Outcomes revealed no significant reduction in LOS in correlation with the implementation of an extended panel of POCT solutions in an ED, but it reduced the time to result.
