Impact of perforation size and predictive factors for successful pediatric gelfoam myringoplasty
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Nov 21, 2019
Shay EO, et al. - In this retrospective chart review involving 159 individuals, researchers analyzed the effect of perforation size on the successful closure of the tympanic membrane (TM) following gelfoam myringoplasty, as well as identify variables that influence perforation closure rates and define predictive factors for successful TM closure. The sample consisted of all patients who had gelfoam myringoplasty by a single surgeon from August 2008 through January 2015. Study participants experienced a total of 219 procedures. Findings suggested that gelfoam myringoplasty provides good overall TM closure rates (83.1%) and can be seen as a possible first-line perforation repair option, including up to 40% TM. Younger patients with smaller perforations, fewer tube sets, shorter tube retention length are more likely to have the tympanic membrane closure successfully.
