Impact of paediatric tonsillectomy perioperative management on pain, nausea and recovery: A prospective cohort study
Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health Jun 03, 2019
Richards J, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers characterized tonsillectomy management, including the burden of pain, nausea and delayed recovery. The audit included 255 tonsillectomy children, interviewing 127 family members. A variety of pain relief and antiemetics were administered intraoperatively. At the post-discharge interview, a third of the children had moderate to severe pain, and 30% had nausea at home. In perioperative and post-discharge care, there was variety. Pain scores have rarely been documented after tonsillectomy, and parents are generally unhappy with post-operative pain and nausea management.
