Impact of obesity on outcomes of breast reconstruction: A NSQIP analysis
Journal of American College of Surgeons Oct 08, 2020
Shakir Z, Puthoff J, Chow G, et al. - This study was conducted with the aim to review the correlation of BMI with complications after breast reconstruction (BR), using the NSQIP 2013-2018 database. BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 defined obesity. A total of 46,042 patients (mean age 51.4±11.1 years, 99.8% female) were studied. Observations revealed the independent predictive value of obesity for a complication after BR, in both implant and tissue-based groups. Overall higher wound complications occur in tissue-based reconstruction, but obesity raises the risk for wound complications more in implant-based reconstruction. Based on findings, they emphasize considering weight-loss strategies in obese patients who consider BR, especially in patients with BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2.
